Success Stories ~ Cravings
"I am so happy with this diet! I only had about 12-15 pounds to lose, but I am on the 3rd day of the Serotonin Balance (3rd week) and I've lost 10 pounds! I feel absolutely wonderful on this eating program! Thank you so much!!!"
"[I lost 50 pounds over a one-year period and have kept it off for 2 years now.] This diet really works. Thanks Serotonin Power Diet for helping me!"
"This is a heartfelt thank-you note to you both for your wonderful book, The Serotonin Power Diet. After ten years of carrying an extra 30 lbs due to anti-depressant weight gain, I am finally losing the weight with success!
I'm so grateful to have the real story about how carbs can actually help me. It's miraculous to manage my mood all day with small snacks. I feel in control for the first time in my whole damned life. As a person who's suffered through a lifelong major depressive disorder, I am beyond grateful for your research. I never thought I would achieve this kind of result and so quickly. I have been following this diet for two weeks, have lost 5 lbs, and I feel confident that the weight will slowly but surely leave my body. My appetite was the final struggle, and your work is the key to my success."
"I just finished the first week of SPD and can't believe how much better I feel. Like a light's been switched on."
"Thank you for the incredible change in my mood and for the 8 kgs that I've lost without suffering :)"
"Ok, I'm on day 3, lost 3 lbs. the first 2 days. :-)
The morning of the second day (yesterday) I woke up about 4 hours earlier than I usually do because I couldn't sleep and had so much energy.
So now on day 3, I feel much more settled, energetic, and happier than I have felt in the last 3 years while I have been taking Lexipro.
I have gained about 50 pounds during these 3 years and ultimately felt worse than ever.
If I can keep losing weight and feel so well, this will be the diet I have been looking for my entire life.
I have always had a weight problem, but before I went on medication I had lost 120 pounds by counting calories & carbs & exercising, looked great and felt great.
I suffered a trauma, went on the medication, and the weight began to creep up. The calorie and carb counting plan did not work anymore because I was always so hungry and tired.
On another note, I wrote a story about angels around 5 years ago. And I named the angel whose name started with the letter A, Adara. After I had written the story,
I came across information about the Adara weight loss clinic, and so it was a coincidence and I let it go.
Imagine my surprise when I picked up the book, The Serotonin Power Diet and found that Doctor Wurtman had founded the Adara clinic! I feel like things have come full circle and I hope that this food plan continues to help me lose weight and feel well.
I just want to thank the authors of this book for all the work, research, and sharing of the information.
No matter what anyone else's results have been, if this food plan helps me, you have saved a life. My mood was spiraling ever downward as my weight was spiraling up. Thank you so much!"

15 pounds lighter in less than 3 months
From a reader who posted a review on amazon.com:
I found Judith Wurtman's book The Serotinin Power Diet to be the only book that deals with what I consider, really counts: Hunger control. Through their year's of research at MIT they have learned what triggers binging and hunger and teaches you what to eat, before attending social events, etc. It teaches you how to control you appetite so you can go into any situation and control yourself and not overeat. So you lose weight easily.
I don't follow her diet I just follow her concept and principles as to how to feed myself for not being hungry, particularly when I have social events. Being at home it is easy to follow any plan; it the going out with friends etc that makes it difficult. But that's the key; she has taught me how not to be hungry.
I have lost 15 pounds in a little less than three months and I am on my way to normalize my body weight and speciallly, lower my glucose. First time something works for me.

I have no cravings at all
From one of our readers:
Hi! i am writing you to thank you for writing this book. I have
been on antidepressants for about a year and a half and at the same time
have tried eating healthy or so I thought, Atkins, Southbeach, weight
watchers, you name it I tried it I'd loose 5 lbs. and then gain 6. I joined
a gym late March 2007 and ended up gaining another 10 pounds within a month.
I was devastated. I was on a message board about how to come off of the
zoloft and someone referenced you book, so I thought what the heck, I've
tried everything else what's another $24.95 + shipping. I started the
program (refuse to call it that 4 letter word..diet) Started on 4/7/07, I
went to the doctor today 4/27/07 and I have lost 10 pounds so far. I am so
excited, i feel so much better, and I have no cravings at all. I love this
way of eating and will be able to maintain this lifestyle long term I am
sure. You have taken the time to research what people who are on medication
can eat while trying to maintain thier weight and you nailed it. Thank you so much. I will update you every 30 days as I go to the doctor and weight in. You're the best.

Less exercise...and still losing weight
From one of our clients:
The diet has helped me so much. I had such carb cravings at night after I
started taking remeron. The antidepressant has gotten rid of my depression almost
100 percent but I gained over 10 pounds in spite of following weight watchers
and going to the gym almost 6 days a week and doing cardio sometimes for over
70 minutes. I did not want to stop the medicine but was very upset about the
weight gain and incredible cravings for sugar at night. This diet has eliminated the cravings totally and I have already lost about 7 pounds in a month.
Also I have been able to cut the cardio down to 30 minutes instead of an hour or
more and still lose the weight.
I have told my psychiatrist about it and he was very interested in it as
weight gain issues come up everyday with his patients.

From a reader who discovered The Serotonin Power Diet on the internet:
I have IBS [inflammatory bowel disease]. I have battled with depression all of my life. I thought I needed medication again. I have been following your diet for a week and it has improved my life in a short amount of time.
This plan helps control my binge eating. I have to remember to eat. I am not a big meat eater, so this makes so much sense. I cannot believe I can eat the foods I have been avoiding for over two years. My weight got up to 185 last month. When I started the diet on Friday March 30, I weighed 178. I did the diet, and I was down to 168 without clothes by Thursday of last week [April 5]...I had not seen 168 in months. I must admit if I get off track, I will binge, and my weight will go up. I messed up over the three day Easter break, but now I am back on track. I was out of town; I was traveling alot, which is no excuse. I realize how important it is to eat on schedule and to eat the right food combinations and portions.
This diet helped me deal with my PMS. I am always out of control during my last two weeks of my cycle. I did some research on the internet, and I discovered your book. I have tried Cymbalta, and I had great success with it two years ago. It was the only drug of its kind that ever worked for me. I read its active ingredients. I figured I needed to try to eat more food that would mimic this in my brain, and low and behold I found your plan! It works so much faster than medication. I will share this with all my friends! More women need to try it. I cannot wait until you create a specific food guide to take out all the guess work!
This is the best
From another happy reader:
This is the best..... Although I have never been obese, I have to watch my weight. I'm 5'5 and weigh about 139. My heaviest was about 160. Anyhow I have been "watching" my weight since my teenage years. I'm 62 (but patient does not appear her stated age or weight). I have been on every wt loss program. Obviously it always gets down to calories in and calories out. This has been the easiest program to stay on. I have no cravings and I am maintaining my weight with no problem. I love this program. I do exercise and work out with a trainer twice a week and have for years but I have never been able to maintain my desired weight so easily before. Thank you.

Finally a diet that works for medication-induced weight gain!
From one of our readers:
In 1998 I weighed 135 pounds, and struggled with anxiety and bipolar disorder. 2 doctors and several medications later, I am now symptom free, but found my weight often flucuating to as high as 225 - not good for a woman 5'6". The medications that have changed my life for the better, have wrecked my self image. I have tried everything - The Zone, Atkins, Weight Watchers (I gained every week at the meeting), Jenny Craig, 3 personal trainers, 2 nutritionists, and a hospital that told me that because of the medications I take there was nothing they could do for me. My last nutritionist was kind enough to tell me that I needed to eat Slim-Fast 2x a day, and a small dinner for the rest of my life, and work out 60 minutes a day at a minimum. She also indicated that I might be able to take off 15-20 pounds, but probably not all of the weight.
I don't know if my situation is familiar to anyone out there, but I wanted to post to let you know that for the first time I have NO carb cravings. That has been my biggest problem. That and the fact that I am so tired from the medications that I just find it hard to get motivated to workout.
I bought this book thinking that it wouldn't work - nothing ever has. Then I read the study online, and I figured, "what do I have to lose?" Apparently 4 pounds the first week, and 3 pounds the second week on the diet. I have also dropped my calories to 1400 a day (from about 2500), and am now working out 30 minutes a day because I finally have the energy! I was hungry the first 4 days, and now I find myself realizing that I forgot to eat.
The premise is simple: 3 meals and 2-3 snacks. Snacks are all carbs to release serotonin, which helps make you feel full so you aren't as hungry when meal time comes. Breakfast is protein & carbs (1 egg and 2 pieces of toast), lunch is protein and vegetables (chefs salad), and dinner is carbs and vegetables (baked potato or rice or pasta with a salad or raw or cooked veggies). Snack can be lowfat cereal, crackers, biscotti - tons of options. Everything is broken down into easy to reference charts with measurements. No calorie counting is really required. Honestly, it was so easy I thought I was missing something. Plenty of recipes come in the book, but you can also adapt your own.
So far I'm down 15 pounds. I just want to say that after 6 years of being VERY overweight, the Serotonin Power Diet is the only thing that has given me any hope of losing the weight once and for all.
If you are suffering from medication-induced weight gain, I recommend giving the Serotonin Power Diet a try.
Potato halts kitchen raid
I just received this email from a gentleman who lives in Costa Rica. He has been contemplating starting The Serotonin Power Diet for months now. You can see why he is now fully committed to start the diet - it works!
Let me tell you what I did today.
I had a potato at the office and some vegetables and it's unreal: when I got home 20 minutes later (as you mention in your book) I didn´t raid the kitchen. First time in my life, I think.

My cravings are entirely gone!
Here's a story from a participant in one of my recent Serotonin Power Diet weight loss groups.
In 3 weeks, I've lost 10 pounds and I feel more energetic than ever. I used to eat ice cream with walnuts, whipped cream and chocolate sauce every evening. I'd even get into the car to go to the store to get some ice cream if we were out. I haven't had any ice cream since starting The Serotonin Power Diet! My cravings for sweets have entirely disappeared which, if you knew me before, is completely different than how I used to be. Now boxes of girl scout cookies sit at home uneaten, and I pass up the cookies and cakes that are everywhere in my office. I don't even crave the butter I used to want to slather on my English muffins - now jam is all I need. I pack my pretzels and carry them with me, and I eat them before lunch and dinner - they really work to control my appetite. My co-workers notice that I'm more social than ever. It's true - this is the first diet I've been on that I haven't felt depressed.
I used to rely on sleeping pills to get maybe 5 hours of sleep but now I fall asleep 2 hours earlier than I used to, I sleep 7 and a half hours, and I don't take sleeping pills. I never tire of carbs and I can live on this diet - it's regular foods I can find anywhere. 6 of my co-workers bought the book to get started on the diet because they can't believe my success. I find the book so full of interesting information. My clothes are looser and I can't wait to buy new smaller clothes, something I love to do. I started The Serotonin Power Diet when I learned it is effective for people on antidepressants, and I've been on those meds for 20 years and I've been gaining weight ever since. Now I want to ask my doctor to reduce my dose of medication because I feel so good.
